Frequently Asked Questions

What is the source of the City’s drinking water?
The Floridan aquifer supplies all of the drinking water for Altamonte Springs. Wells range in depth from 535 feet to 2,500 feet and penetrate different zones of the aquifer.

What treatment methods are used at the drinking water plants?
The water is aerated for reduction of hydrogen sulfide and iron, which are naturally occurring in the water. The water is of such high quality that advanced treatment methods are not needed. Chlorine is added to ensure disinfection. Fluoride is added to help prevent dental carries (cavities). Ortho-phosphate is added to reduce corrosion of lead and copper that is found in some home or business water pipes or fixtures.

What is the source of reclaimed water?
Reclaimed water is the final product from the water reclamation facility. The wastewater is highly treated and continuously monitored to ensure the quality meets all requirements for public access reclaimed water as defined by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

What is the water pressure for the reclaimed water system?
The pressure is maintained between approximately 45-64 psi, although the pressure can seasonally vary based on customers’ use of reclaimed water that is typically related to rainfall levels and temperature. Between 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM when irrigation is prohibited the pressure is often lowered to conserve water.

After 9/11 I read about security concerns at water treatment plants and want to know how the City responded?
Security of the water plants is taken seriously by the City. Shortly after 9/11 the security was reviewed with the outcome being numerous security improvements were made. The City continues to enhance security at multiple levels to greatly reduce any threat directed towards the drinking water or wastewater facilities.
