Street Sweeping Program
The City of Altamonte Springs city-wide street sweeping program provides for the cleaning of the City streets to aid in eliminating materials from entering our storm drains. If storm drains are not kept free of debris they can clog and eventually cause a flooding situation in our neighborhoods. Sweeping the streets also prevents many particulates from entering the stormwater system eventually polluting our lakes and streams. Although an added plus to this program is the cleanliness and beautification of our City streets, it must be realized that this is just an added benefit not the reasoning behind it. The City’s street sweeping program has two employees and two sweepers dedicated to the removal of debris. The sweepers utilize water to keep the dust at a minimum for the comfort of the residents. This program removed 1,101,820 pounds of debris and cumulatively swept 2,298.5 curb miles.
Many people do not realize that discharging matter (grass clippings, leaves, hazardous materials, etc.) into the street and/or storm drains, can add to flooding problems and/or pollution of our lakes and streams. They also do not realize that it is violation of the Code of Ordinances and considered “illegal dumping.” Illegal dumping of this type will be stringently enforced for the protection of all residents. “Discharge of Polluting Matter in Storm System Prohibited” (Section 26-160, City of Altamonte Springs Code of Ordinances)
Residential Street Sweeping
Street sweeping services are delivered by the Stormwater Division on a regularly scheduled basis in the residential areas. In heavy leaf drop time the sweeps are increased to attempt to capture leaves prior to their entering the storm sewer. During this time sweeping takes much longer as frequent dumping is necessary due to the volume of material on the roads. Homeowners can do their part during this period of time by:
- Collecting leaves from yards and placing them in containers on a regular basis
- Advising lawn maintenance companies not to blow leaves into the curb lines
Commercial Sweeping
Street sweeping is performed on primary roads located within the City limits of Altamonte Springs. This is accomplished during non peak times of the day in an effort not to impede traffic flow.
