Alarm Services
The mission of the Altamonte Springs Police Department’s Alarm Division is to reduce or eliminate the occurrence of false alarms both in the home and the work place.
The City’s Alarm Ordinance requires all burglar alarm systems, whether the system is monitored or not, to be registered with the Police Department. This registration information allows the Department to provide a better response to an alarm situation. We are able to contact additional emergency responders when the business owner or resident cannot be located. Also, Lynn Bishop, our Alarm Coordinator, is a very friendly person and likes to know the names of the people she tries to help each and every day.
The Ordinance provides a thirty-day grace period for a newly installed or upgraded security system, during which the user can become acquainted with and accustomed to the equipment. No false alarms are charged against the account during this period. After this grace period, all alarm users are allowed three false alarms in a six-month period with no charges. Should the false alarm occurrences increase to four, a fee of $100.00 would be charged. When the number of false alarms in a six-month period increases to five or more, each and every one will cost $250.00 each. Each false alarm remains on the alarm file for a full six months from the date of the occurrence.
When a malfunction of the security system is suspected as the cause of a false alarm, the user should immediately secure service for the system. After service is completed, and an actual repair or adjustment has been performed, simply submit a copy of the repair documentation to the Alarm Coordinator within thirty days of the alarm incident. This can be done in person, by mail or fax (407-571-8209). Your documentation will be considered for possible credit of the alarm. If we are able to credit the alarm, it will be removed from your file, not to be counted again. If the false alarm incurred an invoice, the invoice would be reduced to the 10% administrative fee authorized by the City’s Alarm Ordinance.
It is very important for all users of the security system to be completely educated on its operation. All users should also have their own password or code, in case of an accidental false alarm. Refer to your owner’s manual often and heed the suggestions and warnings it provides. So much time and money can be saved if we all work together to prevent false alarms. Excessive false alarms can be dangerous for the officer, in addition to preventing the officer from responding to a valid incident that may be occurring at another location.
We, at Altamonte Springs Police Department, appreciate any and all efforts to eliminate the sources of false alarms. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Lynn Bishop at (407) 571-8208 any time Monday through Thursday from 6:00 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. She loves to receive telephone calls about security systems. If she does not have the answers to your alarm questions, she will consult with her many contacts in the security industry and get the answers. She asks that you pay special attention to each and every alarm that occurs at your home or business, as each one is important in one way or the other. Together, we can stop false alarms!
