Crime Scene Unit / Property & Evidence

Breadcrumbs

The Crime Scene / Property & Evidence Section consist of a Senior Crime Scene Analyst who manages the unit, an Investigative Support Technician, and a Property & Evidence Technician.

The Crime Scene Analyst and Investigative Support Technician respond to all major crime scenes to include homicides, suicides, accidental or suspicious deaths, sexual batteries, robberies, child / domestic / elderly abuse cases, and any other case which requires evidence collection or forensic skills beyond that of patrol officers.

The Senior Crime Scene Analyst and Investigative Support Technician are responsible for the preservation of the crime scene, providing documentation of the scene through photographs or sketches, processing the crime scene for latent fingerprints by use of conventional powders, fluorescent powders, chemical enhancers, and alternate light source enhancements.  They are responsible for locating, documenting, collecting and interpreting evidence (e.g. bloodstain patterns, projectile trajectory, and trace evidence including hairs, fibers, tissues, and latent fingerprints)

The Investigative Support Technician also assists the Property & Evidence Technician who is primarily responsible for receiving, storing, and maintaining custody of all property and evidence gathered by Police Department members. The technicians are responsible for storing all property in a manner so that it is safe and can be quickly and accurately retrieved when needed for forensic analysis or presentation in court.  A chain of accountability is maintained for all property and evidence until such time the item(s) are disposed or returned to a property owner.
