CITIZEN'S PUBLIC SAFETY ACADEMY

The Altamonte Springs Police Department sponsors a ten week program that provides citizens with an opportunity to learn about the many areas of police work and personal safety.

Academy students will receive an overview of the following areas within the police department:  Patrol Division, Patrol Technology, K-9 Unit, Special Investigations (Drugs), Traffic Section, Criminal Investigations, Community Oriented Police Services, Uptown Altamonte Unit, Street Crimes and Crime Scene Unit.

Students will receive C.P.R. instruction/certification as well as hands on participation with Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Simunitions and Tasers.  Additionally there will be classes on C.C.A.T. (City-County Auto Theft), C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) and D.U.I. (Driving Under The Influence).

Students can participate in a Ride Along program while enrolled in the Academy.  You will experience first hand what it's like to be in a patrol car and to police the streets of Altamonte Springs.

Students will also be allowed to bring their children or grandchildren to the Academy on one specific night.  On that night, the class will be totally devoted to the children.  They will receive instruction on Bicycle Safety, Fire Safety, Firearms Safety, General Home Safety, Internet Safety and Stranger Danger.  The children will also be treated to a tour of the police department and a dispaly of law enforcement equipment.

The classes are free and the adult students will receive an Academy shirt, notebook and all applicable supplies.  Classes will be conducted on Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm.  A light meal and beverage will be served at 5:30 pm.  Firearms and Simunitions will be on a Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.  The Academy concludes with a graduation where each student receives a class photo and a certificate.

Sound interesting?  The 2012 Academy graduated on April 25, 2012.  Planning is underway for a second academy to be offered later in 2012. If you are interested, apply as soon as possible. The classes are limited to 20 students and will fill very quickly.
