Altamonte Springs Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

 

CERT Information

Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) training promotes a partnership between emergency services and the people they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations or workplaces in basic emergency response skills. C.E.R.T. members are then integrated into the emergency response capability in their area.

If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional first responders, C.E.R.T. members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills they learned during training. These skills can help sustain and save lives following a disaster until help arrives. C.E.R.T. skills also apply to daily emergencies.

C.E.R.T. members maintain and refine their skills by participating in exercises and activities. They also can attend supplemental training opportunities offered by the Altamonte Springs Police Department and other local organizations that further their skills.  Finally, C.E.R.T. members can volunteer for projects that improve community emergency preparedness.

CERT Training

Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) training consists of eight, 3-hour modules.  After completion of training, a hands-on disaster simulation exercise is conducted. The modules consist of:

  1. Disaster Preparedness – Participants will become aware of various types of major emergencies that could affect Central Florida, including the Emergency Management System, and the process of disaster recovery.
  2. Fire Safety – Teaches basic fire suppression, team and personal safety considerations, and an introduction to the problems associated with hazardous materials incidents.
  3. Disaster Medical Operations Part 1 – Disaster medical operations, recognizing and treating life-threatening injuries.
  4. Disaster Medical Operations Part 2 – Triage and sorting of patients, splinting, bandaging, and basic patient care.
  5. Light Search and Rescue Operations – Teaches the techniques to evaluate the area, establish search methods, patterns, and safety precautions.
  6. C.E.R.T. Organization – Focus on C.E.R.T. operations before a disaster or emergency incident occurs: long term planning, how to organize a neighborhood, evaluate available resources and identify people with special needs.
  7. Disaster Psychology – Deals with post-disaster operations, counseling, and stress management.
  8. Terrorism and C.E.R.T. – Introduction to terrorism, response to a terrorist event, how to prevent terrorism in the community, and United States threat levels.

All C.E.R.T. academy graduates will be issued C.E.R.T. equipment.

The next C.E.R.T. Academy is scheduled to begin on June 13, 2012 and will conclude on August 4, 2012. All of the classes are free of charge. If you are interested in attending the C.E.R.T.
