4th Grade Essay Contest
Kids Writing

Each year, the Altamonte Springs City Library hosts an essay contest for 4th graders in Central Florida. The contest gives students the opportunity to polish their writing skills and encourages creative thinking. What makes this contest special is that all qualifying entries are showcased in a published book giving young writers the thrill of seeing their work in print. From these entries, the top three essays are chosen.

2017 Writing Prompt

Surprises come in all shapes and sizes. They can be happy or even a little scary. Have you ever received a surprise gift or party? Have you ever surprised someone else with an act of kindness or a special visit? Write an essay about a time you were surprised or you surprised someone else. Explain what happened and how it made you feel.

Contest Rules
  • Writers must be 4th grade students living in Central Florida during the 2017/2018 school year.
  • The essay must be 300 to 500 words and double spaced.
  • Entries are judged based on originality of ideas and demonstration of writing skills appropriate for the grade level of the student. Language, characters and setting should be appropriate for a library audience.
  • All entries submitted become the property of the Altamonte Springs City Library. The published book is available for checkout from the library.
  • The library reserves the right to edit any inappropriate content, correct grammatical errors and modify punctuation.
  • All essays are checked for originality and plagiarism. Entries are not returned.

How to Enter
Electronic submissions are preferred. Entries must include the following information:
  • Student name, address and phone
  • School name, address and phone
  • A brief biography (25 words) of the student writer

Typed manuscripts are accepted if an electronic format is not possible. If requested, an electronic copy of the essay can be provided upon receipt of a valid email address.

Teachers can do bulk submissions, as long as each entry includes the appropriate information. The contest can be used as a class writing exercise. It is recommended that teachers/parents help with editing the students’ work.
