[DRAFT] NO Swimming or Fishing in Little Wekiva River in Altamonte Springs

On Friday, August 16, 2013, a sewer force main (pipe) which is buried under the Little Wekiva River near SR434 in Altamonte Springs, was found leaking at a joint in the pipe.

Utility and stormwater crews were immediately dispatched to the break. Sewage flow through the pipe has been reduced and the existing sewage is being pumped into tanker trucks. The trucks are transporting the sewage to the City’s Regional Water Reclamation Facility for treatment, until the pipe is repaired.

Water quality samples are being taken, both upstream and downstream from the pipe break. As a safety precaution, the public is asked NOT to swim in or fish from the Little Wekiva River in Altamonte Springs, until water quality sampling results indicate the water is safe. Signs notifying the public not to swim or fish until further notice are being made and will be installed at the entrances to subdivisions in Altamonte Springs where homes are adjacent to the river.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has been notified of the break and is being kept abreast of the situation.

Please contact the City of Altamonte Springs at (407) 571-8686.
